The Fugees translated an intriguing blend of jazz-rap, R&B, and reggae into huge success during the mid-'90s, when the trio's sophomore album The Score hit number one on the pop charts and sold over five million copies. The trio formed in the late '80s in the New Jersey area, where Lauryn Hill and Prakazrel Michel ("Pras") attended a local high school and began working together. Michel's cousin Wyclef Jean ("Clef") joined the group (then called the Tranzlator Crew), and the trio signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1993. After renaming themselves the Fugees (a term of derision, short for refugees, which was usually used to describe Haitian immigrants). Though the group's debut album, Blunted on Reality, was quite solid, it reflected a prevailing gangsta stance that may have been forced by the record label.

The final volume in Bear Family's excellent Freddie King retrospective covering his final years is the one with the most surprises. Over the course of five CDs, the producers of this box have included all of RSO studio recordings and the funky soul-blues of King's Polydor album, Burglar, which Eric Clapton fans covet so much because he was listed as a second guitarist. Burglar was produced by Mike Vernon (with Tom Dowd producing a track) and another studio band that included bassist Carl Radle. Several of the album's outtakes and a studio version of Jimmy Rogers' "That's All Right" see release here for the first time. The second disc kicks off with the live Larger Than Life album. What's remarkable is that instead of the fade out on "Have You Ever Loved a Woman," the rest of the track and concert performance is provided as well. The other discs are all live. Sound quality ranges from very good to excellent; none of this stuff is bootleg material (it would be beneath Bear Family's exacting standards). The final cut on disc five is another previously hidden gem taken from a gig where Clapton sings "Further on Up the Road."

Del Amitri have never achieved the commercial success to match the critical acclaim they receive. As songwriters they are among a small group who consistently turn out well-crafted songs with memorable tunes and thought-provoking lyrics which often reflect real-world cynicism and dark humour, rather than fluffy candyfloss pop. If this is pop, it's adult pop for true music fans who are weary of boy bands and dance music.

These are the roots of my career in music. These tracks have determined the path to follow and many of them where revolutionary and truly progressive at the time they where originally released. I have taken the greatest care to come up with the best possible masters, sometimes comparing up to 5 different versions to find out which one sounded the best and most pure. And sometimes even baking the analog master tapes to make them playable again. The heat evaporates the moisture in the coating of the tape. The otherwise moist backing will clog up all parts of the tape recorder the tape touches, leaving a dark glue like substance grinding everything to a halt. After the backing process, the tape becomes playable again and the transfer to digital is performed. Some tracks feature a combination of vocal and dub version just as I used to perform that combination in a live DJ-set. Such a combination features the best parts from the vocal and dub version, capturing the complete feel of what that track meant to me.
